My Legends of Pop Music – Part Thirty-Four – Manfred Mann

If get this right, there will be many cover versions by future bands. I shall try and link live versions if they exist from the tellybox or a film, the sound quality may not be the best, but there is nothing like watching a real talent live.

So, in a sort of chronological order, my thirty third legends are: Manfred Mann

From their start to about 1969 they were Manfred Mann, but then Manfred formed Manfred Mann’s Earth band, so this article includes both.

Manfred Mann were an English rock band, formed in London and lasting from 1962 to 1969. The group were named after their keyboardist Manfred Mann, who later led the successful 1970s group Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. The band had two different lead vocalists, Paul Jones from 1962 to 1966, and Mike d’Abo from 1966 to 1969.

The group was regularly in the UK charts in the 1960s. Three of the band’s most successful singles, “Do Wah Diddy Diddy“, “Pretty Flamingo” and “Mighty Quinn“, topped the UK Singles Chart. Their 1964 hit “5-4-3-2-1” was the theme tune for the ITV pop music show Ready Steady Go! They were the first southern-England-based group to top the US Billboard Hot 100 during the British invasion.

During my working years as a contractor from 2005 to 2020, would often burst out into song in the office.  Just sing “There she was just a walking down the street, singing” and most would carry on.  Happy days!

Manfred Mann’s Earth Band is an English rock band formed by South African musician Manfred Mann. Their hits include covers of Bruce Springsteen‘s “For You“, “Blinded by the Light” and “Spirit in the Night“. After forming in 1971 and with a short hiatus in the late 1980s/early 1990s, the Earth Band continues to perform and tour.
