An Old Man’s Musings, Part Eleven

Mention of snow of course leads back, for those that were around at that time, to the Winter of 1946/1947.

I was six and the most vivid memory I have was walking between banks of snow well over head height. I suppose I was on my way to school as I cannot recollect them being closed and we set out in our wellies, shorts, heavy coats and balaclavas with gloves kept together with ribbon so we didn’t lose them

I think it was those snowy months that left me with one of my few childhood memories of my mother. I was ill and lying on a bench in the kitchen with the gas oven blasting away to provide as much heat as possible.

I was at the hospital yesterday. The nurse who checked me in was a statuesque West African beauty with perfect English. The two other nurses I could hardly understand.

One probably Filipina the other, difficult to say, possibly Eastern European also with a heavy accent. The Doctor was Pakistani or of a Middle Eastern country. He was not so easy to understand either.

Why oh why can we not train sufficient of our own people to run the health service? The rot set in when it was decided a degree was required.

I am in two minds about Reform. I voted for them and offered my services after the election but have heard nothing since. It is great that paid up numbers are increasing and they are, possibly, our only hope.

Problem is to understand where Nigel actually stands. Some say he is controlled opposition; and he has ‘let us down’ twice now so I would like him to either put up or shut up and hand over to Rupert Lowe who appears to embrace my wishes for the way ahead.

Accepting any more ex Tory MPs would be a mistake in my eyes. From a fast expanding membership there are bound to be some potential stars arising?

Bad Enoch shot herself in the foot there, there are bigger hills to die on.

Having trouble understanding why Elon is making a thing of the Indian programmer thing. When I was recruiting for a small software house we only added one chap from that region and he was living here anyway. From what I understand Indian programmers are not very good so it appears a false economy to recruit them. But I am not the richest man in the World so what do I know!

Turning to my recent struggles with inexpensive printers I have bought another Canon. I am far from thick but what a palaver to install it. I prefer USB connection and I finally got it working. Two weak spots are the power cable which often becomes detached and the connection point for the cable, almost inaccessible.

I bought some Andrex toilet issue and was surprised, but pleased, to see the following printed on the wrapper:

RULE YOUR STOOL

We are on a mission with Bowel Cancer UK to flush Britain’s toilet embarrassment. Scan to see the key symptoms of bowel cancer  (QR Code)

It is a hobby-horse of mine since I lost my younger brother to that foul disease and it looks as though a nephew also has a problem

Continue the good fight good Puffins and may your gods go with you.
