President Trump has promised a $1,776 “Warrior Dividend” for the US military. This article from Military.com seems to offer as thorough an explanation of what is known so far, which isn’t much. According to the article Secretary of “War” Pete Hegseth said that the payments would be tax free and made to 1.45 million service member before Christmas. Regardless of the specifics, is this any way to run a railroad?
It seems as if we’ve heard this song before. Weren’t it announced just a few weeks ago that around three hundred million Americans would get a $2,000 government check? Why, yes! I see that I posted a short report on that promise on November 11th, just over a month ago. Whatever happened to that freebie? That goodie-to-come would add an additional $600 billion to the government’s approximately $1.8 trillion dollar annual deficit. This new freebie for the military, if it ever comes to pass, would cost “only” $2.6 billion. (These numbers are so huge that it’s a real challenge getting the commas and decimal points in the right places, but I think this is correct.)
The president claims that the military bonus would be fully paid out of revenue from his “Big Beautiful Tariff” bill. May I just point out that there is no claim that the government is paying down its debt and has chosen to share some its surplus with the military. The deficit will be at least $1.8 trillion this year. This payment will increase that deficit. So it’s just another raid on the already empty public coffers and will be funded by money printed out of thin air by the Fed, the consequences of which will be further debasement of the dollar.
Just as all children eventually learn that the presents under the Christmas tree come from family and friends, who must pay for them with their own money and not from Santa Claus, the American people should be under no illusion that this is anything more than another raid on their wealth–past , current, and future.
Dear Mr. President, please end this childish, headline grabbing insult to our intelligence. Your Christmas gift to the military is no different than that of a counterfeiter rewarding his cronies at the expense of the rest of us and threatens to destroy the dollar.
