Labour’s bad boys – Part 11 Claudia Webbe

Well she is obviously not a boy though Spanner would be hard pressed to make a decision but let us use “boys” generically.

Claudia, a professional race baiter of whom there are many in politics, was born in Leicester. She was a councillor in Islington from 2010 to 2021 and the MP for Leicester East, Keith Vaz’s old constituency, from 2019 to 2024 though she sat as an independent from 2021 onwards. From 2019 to 2021 she was simultaneously a Labour MP and a councillor in Islington, a busy bee indeed.

I can’t quite put my finger on why but Leicester East seems to attract all manner of wrong ‘uns.

In September 2020 Webbe was charged with harassment of a woman who was having an affair with Webbe’s partner and she also lost the Labour whip. She was convicted in October 2021 and promptly appealed.

She lost her seat in 2024 when against all trends a Tory, Shivani Raja, won the seat.

In her trial for harassment Claudia was described as untruthful and the judge said her defence was vague, incoherent and at times illogical. In November she was sentenced to 10 weeks in prison but suspended for two years. On the day she was sentenced she was expelled from the party.

Of course Webbe appealed and this time the credibility of the woman she harassed was called into question. The harassee, if such a word exists and if it doesn’t it should, was described as an unsatisfactory witness who had told lies. The appeal resulted in Webbe’s sentence being reduced to 80 hours of community service and her compensation to the victim was reduced from £1,000 to £50. The CPS was later ordered to apologise and pay nominal compensation.
