Labour’s bad boys – Part 19 Crayons

If the PM and his Deputy are on the make then we can expect an epidemic of fiddling among their minions.

Angela Rayner has been the MP for Ashton-under-Lyne since 2015. Having left school at 16 with a baby and no qualifications she went quickly from care worker to being a trade union rep, a job for which she was generously qualified. Gobby, thick and aggressive she was a perfect fit, it also helps that union reps are not over-taxed with work and she rose through the ranks and became the convenor for Unison in the North West.

In 2020 Crayons was elected deputy leader of the Labour Party following on from Tom Watson. Some may remember Tom as the man who delivered the black spot to Satan Blair leading to the Caledonian Cyclops taking over as PM. Rayner is wildly popular in the Labour Party, presumably because of her union work and her perpetual portrayal of the class war. Her measured assessment of the Tories as scum remains one of her proudest achievements. Scarcely PhD level is it, perhaps becoming a grandmother at age 37 is her one real achievement.

In April 2022 it was alleged she had tried to distract the Fat Turk by crossing and uncrossing her legs in a manner similar to Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct. Then following an event known as Beergate she said she would resign as deputy leader if she was found guilty of breaching COVID regulations. Eventually both she and Spanner were absolved by Durham Plod.

In 2024 she was accused of failing to properly register the use of Lord Alli’s $2.5 million New York apartment, the ever generous Lord had also gifted her about £3,500 worth of clothes. Rayner later said she would not accept any more clothes from donors. I have to say she looked little better than scraggy when wearing said clothes.

In the same year Michael Ashcroft alleged she had misled the Robbery when she sold her ex council house in 2015. As usual Plod took a look and found nothing untoward.

Finally we come to the one scandal that did for her. It was reported that she had removed her name from the deeds of her house. She sold her 25% share of the house for £162,500 using money from her disabled son’s trust fund. Her son was born disabled and she sued the NHS eventually receiving that sum in compo. So her son’s Trust Fund now owns 25% of the house in Ashton-under-Lyne.

She then set about buying a flat in Hove for £800,000. She paid stamp duty at the normal rate for this flat. There was a dispute about this because depending where she designated her main residence a higher rate may have applied. She of course denied trying to evade tax claiming she had received advice about how much she should pay. It turned out she received no such advice and subsequently resigned as deputy PM, Minister of Housing.and deputy leader of the Labour Party.

Astoundingly, or perhaps not, there is now talk of her returning to the front benches. After previously gobbing off about building 1.5 million new homes when nowhere near that number will have been built during this parliament surely she deserves to remain in obscurity.

In addition to her stamp duty problems there was also a question about council tax on her flat in Admiralty Arch. This comes with the Deputy PM job but seeing as she has been flipping main residences around, she should have been paying a higher rate of council tax if the flat at the Admiralty was actually one of her second homes at any time. The Labour pets in the MSM have been very quiet about this.

When she does return to the front bench it will be as a conquering hero rather than the tax cheat she really is.
