The Surprising Life of Betty Meynard

They say that behind every sucessfull man there is a very surprised woman

Elisabeth “Betty” Maxwell (née Meynard)

Elisabeth Jenny Jeanne Meynard was born on March 11, 1921, in Saint-Alban-de-Roche, France, to a Huguenot family. Her father, Paul Meynard, was a silk merchant and local mayor, while her mother, Colombe Petel, was a Roman Catholic. Elisabeth studied law at the Sorbonne before World War II interrupted her life. In 1944, she met Robert Maxwell (then Captain Ian Hoch) while working as an interpreter in liberated Paris. They married on March 15, 1945, and she converted to support his Jewish heritage, though she remained Protestant. The couple had nine children, whom Elisabeth delivered with help from her sister Yvonne, a gynaecologist. The family lived modestly at first in London, then in luxury at Headington Hill Hall in Oxford from 1960 onward.

Elisabeth supported Robert’s publishing empire as a secretary and public relations aide, and campaigned for him during his 1964 election as a Labour MP. In her 40s, she pursued higher education, earning a BA in modern languages from St. Hugh’s College, Oxford (1974), and a PhD in French literature (1981) with a thesis on 19th-century letter writing. After Robert’s 1991 death and the revelation of his pension fraud, Elisabeth was left destitute, relying on her children and charity. She dedicated her later years to Holocaust research (inspired by Robert’s family losses), founding the journal Holocaust and Genocide Studies in 1987 and organising the “Remembering for the Future” conference in 1988. She authored *Silence or Speaking Out* (1990) and her memoir *A Mind of My Own: My Life with Robert Maxwell* (1994). Honours included the Sir Sigmund Sternberg Award (1988) and fellowships from Tel Aviv University and the Woolf Institute.

Elisabeth spent her final years in Dordogne, France, with her sister Yvonne (d. 2011). She died on August 7, 2013, at age 92 from a heart ailment. No public net worth estimates exist, as she was left penniless after the scandal and lived modestly thereafter.

The Nine Children

The Maxwells had nine children, born between 1946 and 1961. Two died young, and the survivors have led varied lives, often marked by the 1991 pension scandal that bankrupted the family empire. Five (Christine, Isabel, Ian, Kevin, Ghislaine) worked in Robert’s companies. As of 2026, the living children maintain low profiles, with some facing ongoing legal or financial issues. Net worth estimates are speculative and often low due to bankruptcies and scandals.

1. Michael Maxwell (1946–1967; Deceased)

The eldest child, Michael was born around 1946. At age 15 in 1961, he was severely injured in a car accident when his driver fell asleep at the wheel, crashing into another vehicle. Michael remained in a coma for seven years and died in 1967 without regaining consciousness. His death deeply affected the family, particularly Ghislaine, born days after the accident.

No net worth applicable.

2. Philip Maxwell (b. 1948; Age 78 in 2026)

Philip, the second son, was a gifted student who won a scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford, at age 16, studying physics and mathematics. He became estranged from the family due to conflicts with his father, moving to Argentina and marrying against Robert’s wishes. He pursued an academic career in physics but has kept a low profile since the scandal. As of 2026, he lives privately, reportedly in the UK or abroad, with no public business involvement.

Net worth: Unknown; likely modest due to family estrangement and low visibility.

3. Ann Maxwell (b. 1949; Age 77 in 2026)

Ann, the eldest daughter, has maintained the lowest profile among the siblings. Little is known about her life; she did not work in the family businesses and avoided the spotlight during the scandal. As of 2026, she lives privately in the UK, with no reported professional activities or public appearances.

Net worth: Unknown; presumed low.

4. Christine Maxwell (b. August 16, 1950; Age 76 in 2026)

Christine, Isabel’s fraternal twin, was born in Maisons-Laffitte, France. She studied at Oxford and became a tech pioneer, co-founding the McKinley Group (later Magellan search engine) with Isabel in 1993, sold to Excite in 1996. She founded Chiliad, a data analytics firm used by the FBI post-9/11. Christine has been an Internet Society trustee and advocate for online education. As of 2026, she lives in Dallas, Texas, and France, semi-retired but involved in tech consulting and writing (e.g., *The Art of the Dot* in 2013). She supported Ghislaine during her trial but avoids media.

Net worth: Estimated $5–10 million from tech ventures, but unconfirmed.

5. Isabel Maxwell (b. August 16, 1950; Age 76 in 2026)

Isabel, Christine’s twin, was born in Maisons-Laffitte. She studied at Oxford and co-founded Magellan, serving as senior VP until its 1996 sale. She led CommTouch (now Cyren) as president, focusing on Israeli tech ties, and founded Maxwell Communications Network (2006) for US-Israel venture linkages. She was a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer and built Israel Venture Network’s social entrepreneur program (2004–2010). Isabel married filmmaker Dale Djerassi (div. 1989; one child), then David Hayden (div. 2002), and illusionist Al Seckel (m. 2007; d. 2015). Declared bankrupt in 2015 after Seckel’s death amid fraud allegations. As of 2026, she lives privately in California, semi-retired from tech, with occasional consulting.

Net worth: Negative or low; bankrupt in 2015 with debts from Seckel’s schemes.

6. Karine Maxwell (1954–1957; Deceased)

Karine, the sixth child, died of leukaemia at age three in 1957. Her death profoundly impacted the family.

No net worth applicable.

7. Ian Maxwell (b. 1956; Age 70 in 2026)

Ian worked in his father’s companies, becoming chairman of Mirror Group Newspapers after Robert’s death. Arrested in 1992 with Kevin on fraud charges related to the pension scandal, both were acquitted in 1996. Ian co-founded the think tank Combating Jihadist Terrorism (CoJit) with Kevin in 2018, serving as director. As of 2026, he runs CoJit from Greece, focusing on counter-extremism, and supports Ghislaine publicly. He lives low-profile, with past business ventures failing.

Net worth: Low; estimated under $1 million due to scandals and debts.

8. Kevin Maxwell (b. 1959; Age 67 in 2026)

Kevin was deeply involved in the family businesses, becoming Britain’s biggest bankrupt in 1992 with £400 million in debts post-scandal. Acquitted of fraud in 1996 with Ian. His ventures include failed firms like Telemonde and Syncro (banned as a director for 8 years in 2011). He co-founded CoJit with Ian in 2018. As of 2026, Kevin faces bankruptcy over a £600,000 loan tied to a collapsed “Ponzi scheme” fund (Fortress Capital), launching a last-ditch legal challenge in 2025. He lives in the UK, focusing on counter-extremism work.

Net worth: Negative or near zero; facing £600,000 debt and potential bankruptcy.

9. Ghislaine Maxwell (b. December 25, 1961; Age 65 in 2026)

Ghislaine, the youngest and Robert’s favourite, was born in Maisons-Laffitte days after Michael’s accident. Educated at Oxford (BA in modern history with languages, 1985), she worked in family firms and as a socialite. After Robert’s death, she moved to New York, befriending Jeffrey Epstein and allegedly procuring girls for his sex trafficking ring. Arrested in July 2020, convicted in December 2021 on five counts (including sex trafficking of minors), and sentenced to 20 years in 2022. As of 2026, she is incarcerated at Federal Prison Camp, Bryan, Texas (minimum security), with release scheduled for July 17, 2037. She secretly married tech CEO Scott Borgerson in 2016 (div. pending). She has appealed her conviction unsuccessfully, including to the Supreme Court (denied in October 2025).

Net worth: Estimated $20 million (pre-conviction, including trusts and offshore assets), but much seized or frozen; claimed $3.5–4 million at arrest, with FBI estimates higher.
