Some who may have inadvertently read some of my comments may have realised I have some strong opinions on many of the teams in the Premiere League. If you don’t like my opinions you are welcome to your own. Anyhow I would like to lay out my reasons which are many and varied.
Up to the age of 11 I played fitba at school. Then I moved to Grammar school and there was only rugby and hockey, this was not pleasing to me. I was a Gooner in those days and I still remember the 1961 season when Spuds won the double (League and Cup). Many of my friends at school had also been Gooners but far too many flipped to Spuds. At the age of 10 this seemed like pure treason to me and I started my lifelong hatred of Tottenham Hotspur and all its works, I suppose many years later the Tottenham Turnip was never going to be in my good books either. My support of the arse as I like to call them waned many a year ago.
We then come to West Ham. I have had an absolute guts full of BS about them being the fitba academy of the world, Martin Peters being ten years ahead of his time and that prize eejit Ron Greenwood. I only remember him saying every time he watched a replay of the 1966 final he was even more convinced the Erics would win. What a traitor. Their only cup success in the 1960s was winning the European Cup Winners Cup in 1965, the Academy of Fitba was not very successful was it though I believe they won some cup recently.
Now let’s look at ManU or manure as I prefer to call them. They have fans everywhere, I suspect because of their success under the Lord Ferg (of “I was very disappointed in the referee” fame), may brown stuff be upon him. Yer actual ManU supporter is gobby, often lives outside Manchester, possibly has never been to Old Trafford, has little clue about fitba and is so entitled he/she makes the Harkles look shy and retiring. They get on my bits and pieces and I wish nothing but failure for them. Hull beating them 2-0 in the first game of the 2026 season was a delight. Will Carrick’s new manager bounce tail away.
Let’s move to Murkyside. I absolutely detest Liverpool FC. They have played some excellent fitba, have had some excellent players (for example the world class Kenny Dalglish) but it is essentially a cult. You cannot be the manager there unless you understand the club (WTF is that about) and each game is the equivalent of a Catholic mass. Klopp spun them round his little finger notwithstanding his excellent record by playing to the crowd, a politician to his core as well as a good manager.
The blue side of Liverpool, namely Everton, is where my paternal great grandfather was born and he was a real wrong ‘un. Wine women and song were his watchwords, no doubt he wasted the rest of his money. Just that association spoils their record for me. Oddly enough all his children turned out as honest as the day is long. Bodybags is a supporter and if that doesn’t put you off, nothing will.
Meanwhile back in London we can see Chelsea. Now I remember them from the 1960s. It was all happening down the Kings Road. Let us ignore the fact that their ground is in Fulham and concentrate on the 60s. All the jack the lad types I ever met were Chelsea supporters. Then you have Osgood (so good) Chopper Harris and a list too long to mention. I was never a fan of jack the lad types, too much like manure supporters if you ask me. As far as Fulham FC goes I am indifferent.
Manchester City were not really successful in those days along with Newcastle and a few others. Leeds used to get on my bits and pieces as well. Dirty Leeds were aptly named though they were a good team (pace Jen the Blue). Who can forget Franny Lee and Billy Bremner fighting each other as they got red cards and walked off the pitch during a Community Shield or whatever it was called in those days. Oh those were the days.
When it comes to Birmingham teams I have nothing against West Bromwich Albion other than the see you next Tuesday Adrian Chiles famously supports them. Chiles is the one who shopped Caroline Thatcher for mentioning golliwogs in the green room before some talk show. He positively wallows in the grief it caused her and celebrates when the Baggies win – of course, in retaliation,I celebrate when they lose. I am indifferent to Birmingham City but recently have a lot of sympathy for Unai Emery (has he taken to wearing a syrup) at Aston Villa because of the disgraceful way he was treated by Arsenal but not enough to actually support them.
There were a few others who have fallen by the wayside but my support these days is reserved for Inter. Why inter you say. Well it was never going to be a team from the fatherland (Bayern Munich aka FC Hollywood are the ManU of Germany), AC Milan are bloody lefties and my time in Spain left me with no appetite for Real Madrid or Barcelona. I did try Valencia for a while but they are so bad in so many different ways it did not seem worth it and Gary Neville’s tenure as manager did nothing to help.
I remember watching a match in Germany on TV with a few other Germans. When one of the players went down clutching his leg in agony and rolling about like tumbleweed I ventured the opinion that they were taught to do that at school seeing as most of them had perfected it. They got quite shirty about that but I stood my ground.
I can spare no time for today’s Premiere League, full of overpaid prima donnas who in general would switch clubs for an extra few bob despite professing their love for the badge though I do understand their lust for playing in the Champions League. In a world of generalisations these opinions should be taken as yet another bunch of generalisations.
