Purists will argue that John Vassall was nothing to do with the Tories and in a sense they are right. John Vassall was a junior civil servant who spied for the Russians between 1954 and 1962. In spite of his lowly rank he had access to many of our naval secrets which he supplied to Ivan and his mates.
John was a homosexual when such behaviour resulted in a jail sentence. In 1952 he was appointed to the British Embassy in Moscow. A Pole introduced him to the Moscow homosexual underworld. He was of course caught in a honey trap and then blackmailed to spy for the Russians.
When he was caught he was a clerical office assistant to the Private Secretary in the Private Office of Tam Galbraith who was a Tory and the Civil Lord of the Admiralty. Vassall was eventually uncovered by the testimony of Anatoly Golitsyn who had defected to the USA. John got 18 years of which he spent 10 in Wormwood Scrubs before being released. Just to prove that every cloud has a dark lining he was befriended in prison by Lord Longford.
There was much speculation in the tabloids that there was something going on between John and the Minister. Of course nothing was ever proved.
Later analysis of his time as a spy hints that he was not really blackmailed, he was after the money. Whatever the truth it was one more nail in the coffin of the Macmillan government’s demise. It came before the Profumo affair but sort of set the scene showing a government totally out of control.
