Labour’s bad boys – Part 20 Rushanara Ali

Another import from the Sylhet District of Bangladesh. We’ve already had an article on Tulip Siddiq and an honourable mention for Baroness Uddin in the expenses scandal, now we turn our attention to Rushanara Ali. These Bangladeshis are attracted to dodgy business like moths to a flame. Who could forget the antics of Lutfur Rahman.

All of her jobs were of the non-job kind so beloved by politicians of all persuasions, it’s almost like they are not keen on the idea of a hard day’s work. Anyhow the presently 50 year old Rushanara was first elected in 2010 to represent the voters in Bethnal Green and Bow, by 2024 this had been reorganised into the Bethnal Green and Stepney constituency. I guess there is little likelihood of a non ethnic ever winning this seat again.

Ms Ali has appeared on Question Time so I guess our esteemed QT reporter AWS has given her the once over if you will excuse the expression.

In 2018 Ms Ali received a package containing an “anti-Islamic”  letter and a “sticky substance”. The mind boggles, said substance was later found to be harmless and one hopes not full of protein. Something much the same was also received by three other Labour MPs, Mohammed Yasin, Rupa Huq and Afzal Khan.

In 2020 Rushanara was one of 76 Labour MPs who encouraged the government to grant public funds to all migrants in the UK whether they were here legally or not. Sounds like a vote winner to me, at least in certain quarters.

In March 2021 an 42 year old man was convicted of organising an 18 month campaign of hate against Ms Ali including death threats.

During the 2024 GE her 37,000 majority fell to 1,700 and she only won narrowly. The opposition was one of the independents, Ajmal Masroor another Bangladeshi. She needed police protection during her campaign because of intimidation and even death threats. If you don’t full on support the Pallies you are going to be in trouble.

Speaking of Rahman, we now see Ms Ali channelling her inner Rachman with bells on, Peter Rachman that is.

As Minister for Homelessness you might have thought Rushanara would have a kind of soft spot for tenants. Well maybe she did but not for her own tenants. She evicted the tenants of her property in Bow, allegedly with a view to selling it. It did not sell and so she advertised it for rent again at a higher rate. Her letting agency also tried to charge the tenants for repainting and cleaning to a professional standard, something not allowed by the 2019 Tenant Fees Act. She had already introduced a Renter’s Rights Bill in an attempt to stop landlords from doing what she had just done. Hypocrisy is too mild a word.

She jacked it in the same day claiming she had done nothing wrong but was becoming a distraction for the government. There must be a case to be made to ban Bangladeshis from standing in councils and Parliament.
