Apologies for this week’s rather brief article. I wanted to write more but it is all speculation so far.
We stand at the brink of the end of the war in Ukraine but we shouldn’t hold our breath. I can’t wait for it to finish, white men killing other white men is something we need to leave in our past. I refrain from saying if I would like to see others killing each other.
Donald Trump has set the stage, it is now up to Putin and Zelensky to reach an agreement. Each side has impossible demands for the other. If one side capitulates then there will be a deal. If both sides do a bit of give and take then there might be a deal. If each side sticks to their guns, there will be no deal and the wrath of the United States will be mighty.
Without going into the details of the competing demands, let us assume that somehow they do reach an agreement and the fighting stops on the ground. Now we are at a most dangerous point in the proceedings.
The coalition of the willies may put troops on the ground probably under US air cover. Unfortunately I believe there are enough nutcases on the Ukrainian side who will take great exception to the deal and will be determined to keep fighting. I am less sure any Russians will want to fight on though you can never be sure. It will only take a few drones attacking Russian targets for everything to unravel pretty fast and we know Ukraine has drones a plenty as do the Russians.
This is without reckoning on those members of the coalition of the willies who also want to see the war continue. What tricks will they play to ensure the meat grinder rolls on.
I have just seen tweets that say
- Putin is not going to meet Zelensky
- The Donald is arranging a trilateral meeting between the US, Russia and Ukraine.
Maybe both are true and the Donald has decided to crack a few heads together.
One of the best pieces of news I have heard, though it may be wishful thinking, is a report that Ukraine will be forced to hold elections and Zelensky will not be allowed to stand. Surely we have all seen enough of the corrupt little so and so.
The coalition of the willies reminds me of the bloke in the bar who offers to hold others’ coats while they slug it out. That would be about par for the course for our dear leader though he does seem determined to put some boots on the ground. I am sure he has visions of Maggie recovering the Falklands in 1982 and at a stroke putting the election beyond Labour’s grasp.
As the days go by there seems only an outside chance that Putin and Zelensky will actually meet. As we can see, it is very easy to start a war but extremely difficult to finish one.
