There have been instances of MPs getting a bit punchy after over indulging in the in-house bars in the House of Shame. This has largely been fisticuffs between MPs themselves. However, in what may be a world first, Mike Amesbury beat up one of his own constituents in the street.

Michael Lee Amesbury was the member for Runcorn and Helsby from 2017 to 2024.  Previously he had been a member of Manchester City Council from 2006 to 2017.

In 2019 he apologised unreservedly for sharing an anti-semitic post on FaceAche in 2013. He claimed he did not remember sharing it but was mortified and this was not something he would have done intentionally. This is the kind of thing they all say.

In 2023 a 58 year old man was convicted of stalking and harassing young Mike. This happened in the summer of 2022.

Early on the morning of 26 October 2024 Mike was captured on CCTV footage showing him punching a man to the ground and shouting “You won’t threaten the MP again will you”. As the man was on the ground Mike threw more punches. Some bystanders intervened to restrain Amesbury.

Pending investigations the Labour Party suspended the whip. People who were there say that the victim had started talking about a bridge closure during winter and the discussion boiled over finishing with punches.

Amesbury was charged with common assault, pled guilty and was sentenced to 10 weeks. He then appealed but the original sentence was confirmed though the judge suspended it for two years. He was also ordered to attend anger management courses. On St Patrick’s Day in 2025 he was appointed as Steward and Bailiff of the Chiltern Hundreds thereby quitting the House of Shame.

His seat was won at the by election by Sarah Pochin of ReformUK. The left do not easily, if ever, forgive and Sarah has been subjected to much abuse by the oh so tolerant lefties.
