Following on from the first book in the series (The Last Dance), The Wrong Hands picks up the story of Detective Sergeant Declan Miller, the flippant and somewhat unorthodox individual.
The story kicks off with a young man arriving at Miller’s doorstep with a briefcase containing a pair of severed hands. This bizarre and gruesome discovery sets the stage for a complex investigation that intertwines Miller’s personal vendetta with his professional duties.
Miller is still haunted by the unsolved murder of his wife, Alex, and he suspects local crime boss Wayne Cutler is involved. The severed hands are proof of a contract killing commissioned by Cutler, giving Miller the leverage he needs to pursue justice; however, the case quickly becomes more complicated as various eccentric characters enter the fray, including a hitman obsessed with Midsomer Murders, a psychotic welder, and a woman driven to the edge by a wayward Crème Egg.
Billingham’s writing is both suspenseful and darkly humorous, creating a fast-paced narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. The plot is filled with twists and turns, and the characters are richly developed, each with their own unique quirks and motivations. Miller’s interactions with the ghost of his wife add a poignant and emotional layer to the story, making it more than just a typical crime thriller.
Overall, The Wrong Hands is a compelling read that blends mystery, humour, and emotional depth, and Billingham’s ability to create a gripping and entertaining story while exploring the complexities of his characters makes this book a standout in the genre. If you’re a fan of crime thrillers with a touch of the unconventional, this book is definitely worth your time.
