If someone approached you and took a wild swing at you, you would try to avoid it. Some of you might even fight back but the sensible option is that you would at least take avoiding action.
One of the big problems lefties have is that they are convinced they can change one thing and everything else will remain the same.
For example, if there is a tax and it is set at 20% and raises £2 billion then raise the rate to 40% and it will mean you are getting £4 billion out of it. This kind of thinking excludes considering that those paying the tax may not be at all impressed and will take actions to avoid paying it. Those who are really rich, a perennial target of the left, can afford the best accountants and lawyers to ensure they pay as little as possible. Our present Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel from Accounts, is a fully paid up member of this club. I say fully paid up but it would be a good guess to assume that she claims the membership fees on expenses.,
I have been puzzled about the assertions that young Rachel either is or isn’t a qualified accountant. It matters not one jot whether she is or isn’t. The economy is a large and complex subject and she has hordes of civil servants in her Treasury who do have some idea of what goes on in our economy,. Her job is to listen to advice and use her political judgement to make the decisions. Sadly it appears that her political judgement is about as much use as the Prime Minister’s. This is probably because neither is a real politician. Starmer is a lawyer and is obsessed with rules and regulations, he has a tin ear when it comes to political judgments and while not a lawyer, Rachel is little different, you would think her having worked in complaints would mean she is used to people complaining.
The latest example is the non-dom fiasco. The Tories had committed to abolishing this anachronism but not just yet. Now as is always the case with Labour, not only do they want to close what they see as a loophole they also want punish those who don’t agree with them. Labour’s change was to bring forward the removal of non-dam status to the next budget. I still reckon NikNak made this a change for the future so he would have enough time to skedaddle off to California before it was implemented.
The original estimate, by Labour of course, was that this would bring in an extra £3.9 billion to the Treasury. More recently this was downgraded to £1 billion and the very latest estimate is that it will cost the Treasury money. The reason for this is that the billionaires and even mere millionaires are voting with their feet and upping sticks. The left always want to punish those they consider rich. Dennis Healey in the 1960s famously wanted to make the pips squeak. He didn’t manage to do that because if you have enough money you can take steps, unavailable to us plebs, that will keep your money out of the taxman’s hands.
There is a curious weakness in Lefty Logic that says you can legislate punishment beatings and the proposed victims will meekly accept it. As we all know the left is driven by greed, envy and hatred; not necessarily in that order. The last few decades have seen an increase in the levels of hatred on display.
The favoured targets are Donald Trump in the USA along with Nigel Farage and Tommy Robinson in this sceptred isle. Maggie used to be on this list but the passage of years means she only makes the odd guest appearance. The Tory Party used to be the popular target but it is fast becoming an irrelevance. The Tories themselves have their pet hates but when they draft laws and budgets there is not so much of the overt display of punishment the socialists want to see dispensed. We can expect the shadow of ReformUK looming ever larger as the next GE approaches. They will surely be some very interesting by elections over the coming few years. Squeaky bum time for many.
Back in the 1960s we had the example of Barbara Castle and her “In place of strife” report. This was designed to curb the excesses of Labour’s paymasters the unions, The paymasters were not at all happy and this report gradually sank never to see the light of day again. Some lefties can see the problems but are never able to do anything about them. The same happened when Frank Field was asked to think the unthinkable by Satan Blair. He did just that and his report was buried under ever more abuse.
After Keith’s great reset, a highly forgettable performance, it is more than likely he will need another one and in the not too distant future. I forget how many resets the Caledonian Cyclops announced. Not one of them made a blind bit of difference, the electorate had seen through him shortly after he picked up the reins if not before.
The truth is coming home to roost. See Thursday’s QT (I forget which one now) for an explanation. A majority of the “carefully selected” audience were more at home with Nigel Farage than Alkie Campbell. Either times are a changing or somebody at Al-Jabeeba got it seriously wrong. Alkie was highly miffed when he applauded one of his audience plants but nobody else did. I look forward to the day when the murderous Alkie joins his mate Dolly Draper in that great debating chamber in the sky.
These days they don’t even pretend any logic, they just steamroller things through and ignore any bad publicity. Ed Sillyband is now coming in for criticism from Wes Streeting of all people. No it’s not about his ridiculous net zero but about when he didn’t back CallMeDave taking action in Syria to remove Assad back in 2013 or so. Sillyband is now being held responsible for 10 or more extra years of Assad ruling Syria. As far as Arab leaders go I don’t think he was bad, there have been many who were much worse.
Sillyband is now coming under criticism for a £43,000 refit of his office. When questioned about it he just laughed which is what he does at us all the time. Cracks are beginning to appear in the cabinet. With the latest dire economic statistics, another month like this one may set the rats fighting in their sack about Rachel from Accounts’ stewardship of our ailing economy. With over 1 million new arrivals every year surely our economy should be booming.
One of the finest examples of lefty logic is the paying of taxes. They will all quote some half baked and possibly non existent opinion poll that indicates the public are in favour of paying taxes for the services government provides. I don’t believe it, most people are in favour of others paying taxes but not themselves. When asked who should be paying they will reply “the rich”. Their definition of “the rich” is anyone with more money than them. So keen are our MPs on contributing that they either exempt themselves from any taxes or create the rules that allow them to claim expenses to cover the costs. To be fair it is MPs from all sides who appear reluctant to take their hands out of our pockets and put them in their own pockets though since CallMeDave’s time and even before most MPs have been of the lefty persuasion.
Our dear leader himself is so keen on following the rules he has an Act of Parliament all to himself entitled
The Pensions Increase (Pension Scheme for Keir Starmer QC) Regulations 2013 and consists of exclusions to the 1971 Pensions Act
The 1971 Act shall have effect in relation to any pension payable under the Pension Scheme for Keir Starmer QC (being a scheme made under section 1 of the Superannuation Act 1972(1)), as if it were a pension specified in Part 1 of Schedule 2 to the 1971 Act.
One day I will check out said Pensions Act and Superannuation Act (they look like two of Grocer Heath’s abominations) to see exactly what Keith is bypassing.
Prior to the last General Election Labour promised not to increase our tax burden which was already one of the highest ever. No sooner was Rachel from Accounts poring over the details of her budget than they came up with the wheeze of finding a black hole that needed filling. They claimed the black hole was £22 billion. To cover this they put taxes up by over £40 billion. I do not believe there was a black hole and neither did Jeremy Bonus Hole, the previous Chancellor. Simultaneously a smug looking Rachel claimed this was a budget for growth. Any fool knows you do not tax your way to prosperity. Argentina, a perpetual basket case for a century, has proven this by cutting their government drastically thereby reducing inflation to less than 3%. It remains to be seen if they will revert to type once Señor Milei retires.
The other thing lefties conveniently overlook is that when you change tax rates or invent new ones it has a kind of knock on effect on other taxes. Many other yields will not be quite what you expected as for one example employment goes down. The latest estimate on the farmers’ IHT fiasco is that it will cost HMRC £1.25 billion. This replaces the government’s original estimate of an extra £500 million or so in revenue. How they reach these numbers is a mystery. Nobody even agrees on how many farmers will be impacted and until they can figure that out all figures are suspect. It looks more and more like a sop to Bill Gates and his mates in Blackrock, or is it Blackstone, who are poised like vultures to start buying up our farmland. The objective then is to force farmers to start selling off bits of their farms.
I fear lefty logic is all this shambles of a government has as a set of principles. They will just have to lie harder because they are unlikely to be removed for another four years though Keith will be gone a lot sooner though Sillyband may well be on his bike first.
