Nigel Farage has played a blinder so far, Reform UK lead in the polls, the Tories are on their way to oblivion hopefully accompanied by Labour and the world is his Lobster as Arthur Daley once said. He has previously said he is on the Thatcherite side of Tory thinking but some of his recent pronouncements must be raising red flags.
Constantly pilloried for the costs of Brexit he needs to fight back and assert that it is a rubbish implementation that is to blame. The hag May had no intention of getting us out of the clutches of the EU. She came up with a bizarre deal that was the worst of however many worlds you care to count. Along comes the fat Turk blustering and bloviating and pronounced the deal oven ready with a couple minor tweaks. And so it came to pass that they claimed we had left the EU when we had done no such thing.
Fast forward to now, the Tories did very little about our relationship with the dictatorial EU while in office and now Keith is busy trying to undo as much of it as he can and put us firmly under the control of Fonda Lying and her mates.
Even now Keith’s “reset” is full of holes. He claims to have done the fishermen a favour by extending if not increasing the existing fishing arrangements in the EU’s favour. Surely the objective would have been to reduce the EU’s access to our waters because the original deal was a transitional and therefore temporary fix. A few have mentioned this but nobody is holding Keith’s feet to the fire. Come on Nigel, stick it to him.
I am reasonably certain that Maggie would have been in favour of a two child benefit cap and would have liked cuts to Welfare. She got more than enough flak from the left, had she tried such cuts it would have caused uproar. Keith is now dabbling with both these ideas. His new nickname is Mr Flip-Flop because he does 180 degree turns on many of his policies and then might flip back again. There is a lot of anger in the Labour ranks about welfare cuts, especially the disability payments. Keith may yet flip flop again. Reform have now decided they will do the same as Labour and remove the two child cap and keep welfare much the same.
On Farage’s Thatcher side we have a plan to abolish inheritance tax and set the personal allowance up to £20,000, scrap net zero, scrap asylum hotels and scrap the DEI nonsense.. All of these would have garnered Maggie’s approval. So we have some policies the tramp would approve of and more that Thatcher would have signed up to. It looks to me that, rather like Keith, he is trying to be all things to all men. Good luck to him if he can pull it off.
Nigel’s grift is legendary. He never passes a chance to make a few bob on the side. I suppose most of us would but do we want this in a potential PM. I guess there are precedents.
At the County Council level the 10 Councils controlled by Reform will now use the powers they have to resist migrants being dumped on them and they will try to redirect any migrants to areas controlled by especially the LibDums and the Greens. Both of those parties are in favour of as much immigration as possible. If it works, let’s see how they like being flooded with invaders.
Reform’s power in Parliament with only 5 MPs is provided by the recent local elections, the opinion polls and by elections. These are terrifying the pants off the other parties, even Labour in Scotland is getting wobbly being reduced to labelling Nigel as racist. We may have another couple of Westminster by elections coming up to unleash yet more panic.
Reform only have 5 MPs in Parliament, it would have been six had the tiff between Farage and Lowe been kept behind closed doors. The only place they have any real power is in their ten Councils. The unions will fight them all the way, the officers (in other words the shirkers) will do even less than normal in an attempt to make them look bad. Each little slip up will be magnified by the MSM and their reputation will rest on what they can achieve in the local town halls.
These may well be the interesting times the Chinese always promise.
I fear if Farage ever gets the keys to number 10 he will turn out to be as lazy as the fat Turk was. In spite of that he may well succeed but only if he gets the right people in the right jobs.
As usual the MSM and the left are already attacking him about his spending plans. I include the Tories in the left in this statement. On Wednesday Nigel announced a bevy of spending pledges and according to the usual suspects he doesn’t know where the money is coming from. He was given a chance to respond and did so robustly. Cancelling all the idiot things (e.g. net zero anyone ?) we currently spend money on will result in more savings than his spending promises.
Yet again where those questions to Keith when he goes on a spending spree, be it the billions to Ukraine for 100 years, the bribe to Mauritius over the Chagos deal (supposedly from the hard-pressed defence budget), the carbon capture insanity or Militwat being given carte blanche to spend untold billions on anything that takes his fancy. There are now rumours about a £70 billion black hole. Just when you thought the fictitious £22 billion black hole bequeathed by the Tories had run its course, Keith can’t just come up with oh you remember that 22, it was actually more like 70.
GB News had two Tories on this morning with identical little complaints screeching about “where will the money come from”, they really are rattled. I note that nobody ever presses Keith about his spending plans, they say we are approaching a £70 billion black hole by the time the autumn budget that Rachel from Complaints will have to fill and raising taxes is their only feasible solution.
On Thursday Nigel tweeted ( I refuse to write X’d)
In the last 24 hours I have been attacked by Starmer, Badenoch, Swinney, Sarwar and just about everybody else — except for the voters.
We must be winning.
My big worry is that Reform will go one step too far as they mimic Labour. Stealing the other party’s clothes only goes so far as many discovered over the past few decades. The other question is what exactly are Starmer’s policies. He changes his mind more often than a woman shopping for a new pair of shoes.
