Labour’s bad boys – Part 22 Cap’n Bob

Ian Robert Maxwell (NHRN) was born 1923 in Czechoslovakia as Ján Ludvík Hyman Binyamin Hoch. His birthplace is now Solotvyno in Ukraine. I believe it was Private Eye who christened him Cap’n Bob presumably based on his army rank and he was often known as the bouncing Czech. A man of the Hebrew faith from which he never deviated and a massive ego to boot.

During WW2 he escaped from the Reich and was firstly in the Czech Army in exile and then had a stint in the British Army, the North Staffordshire Regiment, ending up as a Captain. During the war he won an MC in 1945 for storming an enemy machine gun nest and the medal was presented by none other than Bernard Law Montgomery.

At the end of the war he was attached to the Foreign Office (my spook detector starts beeping) working in Berlin in the press sector. In 1946 he became a naturalised British citizen and changed his name by deed poll.

After the war, using his list of contacts, Maxwell became the British and US distributor for Springer Verlag, a German publisher of scientific books. He expanded this, renamed it to Pergamon Press and it became a major publisher of academic works.

In 1964 Maxwell was elected as the Labour MP for Buckingham. In 1970 he lost his seat and never regained it. Maxwell was the chairman of Oxford United FC. He saved them from bankruptcy and attempted to merge them with Reading FC thereby creating the Thames Valley Royals. Non football people never understand the depth of hatred two sets of supporters can have for each other. See some of our American owners these days for further examples.

In 1984 he gained control of Mirror Group Newspapers. This was after unsuccessful attempts to buy the News of the Screws and the Sun. At a press conference after the purchase, Maxwell said his editors would be free to produce the news without interference. This turned out to be Goebbels level lies. I remember hearing about his management style. It was called telephone terrorism. He would call an underling, bark orders non stop and slam the phone down leaving the victim unable to respond.

Cap’n Bob was suspected of being in league with just about every intelligence outfit on the planet but he always remained faithful to Mossad. ’Twas Maxwell who shopped Mordechai Vananu who leaked details of Israel’s nuclear plans and subsequently spent 18 years in prison including 11 in solitary confinement.

A man best described as flamboyant who lived a full life to the full. He was found dead in the sea near his yacht off the Canary Islands. He was buried with full honours on the Mount of Olives in Israel, not just that, he was buried alongside the Israeli Pantheon of heroes, his services to Israel will probably never be fully known.

My favourite anecdote was that he wanted to name his corporate HQ to Maxwell House which at the time was a famous brand of coffee. When he learned he couldn’t do that he was completely lost, he did not understand why it was not possible.

He will be mainly remembered for embezzling £400 million from the Mirror Group pension fund. This was at a time when his businesses were experiencing continual financial problems. Very little, if any, of the £400 million was ever recovered. My suspicion, with absolutely no proof, is that he sent it to Israel and they showed their gratitude by giving him such an honoured resting place.

His daughter continued the family tradition with her involvement with Jeffrey Epstein. She was convicted at the end of 2021 and sentenced to 20 years in jail for sex trafficking nobody to nobody. It appears there were apparently no victims and no clients.

As a final example of faint praise Gorgeous George Galloway described the bouncing Czech as one of the worst criminals of the century.
