An Old Man’s Musings Part Forty-Four

Watched again the Morecambe and Wise sketch with Andre Previn. This is a comment on the video:

‘One of the greatest sketches of all time. Humour doesn’t really cross the pond but bravo to Andre for chipping in so well.’

So much of the beauty of Eric and Ernie comes from the cultural history of our country up to that point. We were a national family, with shared memories of war, deprivation, struggle and survival…and throughout that, the will to survive and keep laughing. My working class parents went through the war – the bombing, little food and absolutely NO security. Loved ones serving in the war. Surrounded by death, at home and abroad. They always used to say to me, “Have fun, you could be dead tomorrow”.

Eric and Ernie came out of the music hall. Their humour was based on human frailty, relationships, absurdity and wonderful timing. Song and dance. Pure life enhancing entertainment.

This is the art that conceals art. A unique degree of timing and nuance underpins their childish clowning. Our country loved them deeply. They were a national institution. Such happy days. We still had very limited material possessions in the 1970’s. But we had the best music (60’s and 70’s) and the BBC, then, was our jewel in crown. Alas no longer. Thank you for posting. All the best.

I would be interested to hear about sketces which you have enjoyed – another favourite of mine is ‘Biggus Dikus’ – has me in stitches every time.

I have mentioned that I changed from OVO to EDF – talk about frying pan and fire! Present state of play.

Hello EDF

In response to your email of 29th September.

This is crazy! You have, apparently, a lot of my money in credit and you have consistently failed to substantiate my usage. It is your problem to have working so called ‘smart’ meters.

This must be resolved now as I shall leave Swansea in November/early December.

Ombudsmen are useless – I have previous experience of that.

The obvious solution is to agree an amount for electric and gas, based on the months for which you have some reasonable idea of usage + any projection you made before I agreed to move to you + usage based on previous tenants here or similar 2 bed ground floor flats with two occupants – less penalties you have already agreed and further penalties against you to pay for the complete chaos in your organisation and the time and trouble it has cost me in changing over to you.

If that is beyond your capabilities I would be happy to help you, at a cost of £45 pounds per hour.

Yours sincerely

Gillygangle

Update (13 Oct) Received another bill with estimated usage amounts. They have not sparked on my suggestion.
