13, or thereabouts, U turns

It seems there are more than 12 U-turns but it does depend how you count them. Let’s list them

  • Mandatory digital ID for workers
Watered down to not being mandatory in every case.
  • Winter Fuel Allowance scrapped
Some now get a reduced WFA
  • Disability and sickness benefits
Big noise about reducing the bill but in reality, everything is going up
  • NI pledge
    Modified after a backlash
  • Income tax thresholds
Now in the 5th year of a freeze and no sign of a thaw
  • Two child benefit cap
Talk of changing it and then keeping it in place
  • Day one employment rights
    Apparently not going in
  • Pubs / hospitality measures
This is the increase in business rates, let us see what they decide
  • State pension age, WASPI related issues
Supported in opposition, now ignoring it
  • Grooming gangs enquiry
Initially resisted it, then agreed to a national inquiry but hobbled it from day one
  • Trans rights definition
    Only after the court ruling
  • IHT changes for farmers and family businesses
    Thresholds increased
  • Fiscal Rules / Debt measurement change
This has been adjusted to allow more borrowing, weren’t we already drowning in debt ?

There are 13 here but some sort of merge with others, shall we settle on 11+

From what I can see very few of the these U turns were ever policies in the 2024 manifesto. This is hardly surprising because the manifesto was so vague as to be meaningless. The closest we probably get is the promise of day one employment rights and to not to raise NI, tax rates or VAT. This was allegedly to not hit the hard working people with any tax rises. What followed was employer’s NI going up, the threshold remaining at 12,570 since 2021 and the day one employment rights. These three things, along with the rise in the minimum wage and the hospitality industry being hammered, have curtailed employment and remuneration in ways we haven’t seen since the 1930s. So much for not hitting the hard working people of whom there are a diminishing number. Meanwhile the bennies class and their bennies are rocketing.

I wonder if Labour had put any of these policies in its manifesto, would they still have got a massive majority. I still think they would have won because the Tories had been so bad, thanks NikNak, fat Turk and May. A smaller majority would have been far better all round and perhaps Spanner would have been able to fit a smaller cap on his swollen head.

Although the Chagos negotiations were started by the Tories, notably that perpetual plank James “not so” Cleverley, Labour, in the shape of Spanner and Hermer, jumped straight in and got their arrangement sorted in double quick time. All of us fail to see why we have to hand these islands over to Mauritius and none of us can understand why we will be paying them £30 odd billion for the pleasure. There hasn’t been so much a U turn but the Lords in their wisdom have held it up and kicked it back to the Commons. I fear someone is on a drink and a handsome one to boot.

Finally the Tottenham Turnip is unable to adequately explain why he wants to curtail trial by jury in many cases. They say it will be for crimes where the sentence is 3 years or less and it is claimed there is a backlog of cases they need to clear. This is complete BS. There is no provision for returning to trial by jury when the alleged backlog is cleared and that means they want it for ever. I have an explanation and it is quite simple. When the alleged rioters and tweeters were jailed they were told plead guilty and we will go easy on you. Most did and got hammered in the sentencing. They will not be able to pull that one again. We must all be aware that Rodney Spanner has the judges in his pocket and can induce them to hand down sentences of which he approves. Future transgressions on social media will be held in front of a judge, not a jury and our esteemed leader will be dictating the sentences.  How democratic is that.

Were I a complete cynic (what do you mean) I would hazard that Labour had all these plans in the pipeline but did not dare mention them to the electorate. It is amazing how one after another these have emerged from the government and sailed straight into trouble.

I feel certain that the fraud being uncovered in Minnesota is also happening here to some degree and various stories are starting to emerge. This would be another reason TTK wants to curb X, none of the other social media companies would hear a word against our dear leader.

We are rapidly heading towards an English Democratic Republic, modelled on the German version that collapsed in 1989.
