Postcard from the Algarve, No 5

June 2019 Competition

Emile Woolf, Going Postal

Firstly, as a relatively new Going Postal contributor, I must express my sincere thanks to the discriminating GP readers who rewarded my efforts their votes for my economics essays last November.

And what a reward! A week in early May in Armacao de Pera in the central Algarve is bound to be special anyway, but being able to stay in the delightful ground floor apartment of JustaBritabroad is in a class of its own. Arriving there, less than an hour from Faro airport, and being met by the man himself, guaranteed a spell of uninterrupted relaxation and peace of mind, especially as he had laid on beer, wine, milk, bread and many other victuals in the apartment, in preparation for our visit.

I was accompanied on this holiday by my wife Anita and middle son Alex, a successful author of children’s books, and we could not have found a more congenial or better placed location for a week in this exceptional part of the world.

The weather was sublime, rising to around 26 degrees every day; the colours of sea, cliffs, beaches and coves accessible only by boat, are breathtaking. As occupiers of our host’s apartment we were entitled to unencumbered use of the next-door 4-star hotel’s amenities, including indoor and outdoor swimming pools, ample lawns with beach chairs and umbrellas, choice of excellent restaurants from fresh fish beach-bar to haut cuisine; fitness centre for the more energetic holiday-makers – and cliff-top walks with truly staggering views all within a short walk of the village itself.

I am no photographer, but I hope that Swiss Bob will be able to attach a few pictures to give readers a feel for this magical place.

Fellow bloggers, sharpen your pens – this is a prize worth striving for!
